SLU MUSIC ENSEMBLES OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY

CANTON – The University Chorus, the Special Productions Ensemble, the
Early Music Ensemble and the String Ensemble at St. Lawrence University
all are accepting new members for the spring 2004 semester. Membership
in all of these ensembles is open to the community as well as faculty,
staff and students of St. Lawrence.
A celebration of diversity will be the theme of this semester's
University Chorus concerts, which will feature choral arrangements of
folk and traditional songs from around the world – Africa, Latin America,
Europe and our own land, including Aaron Copeland's "Old American Songs."
The Early Music Ensemble consists of two groups, the Early Music
Players for instrumentalists and the Early Music Singers for vocalists.
Music of the great Renaissance composer Guillaume Du Fay will be the focus
for this semester. The Players will also perform Baroque chamber music.
For membership information, contact director Barry Torres at 315-229-5171
or btorres@stlawu.edu.
St. Lawrence's unique Special Productions Ensemble for instrumentalists
will journey musically to Texas of the 1940s and 1950s, exploring orquesta
tejana music. The performance will feature rancheras, boleros, polkas and
mambos by Beto Villa, Isidro López and others. Contact director David
Henderson at 315-229-5085 or dhenderson@stlawu.edu for more information.
The String Ensemble will start its second semester under the
direction of Christian Hosmer. Repertoire for this semester includes the
Mozart Serenade in D major, K. 137. Interested string players should contact
Hosmer at cello@twcny.rr.com.
