A List 8/16/04 SLU MUSIC ENSEMBLES SEEKING NEW MEMBERS CANTON – The University Chorus and the Early Music Ensemble at St. Lawrence University are accepting new members for the fall 2004 semester. Both ensembles are sponsored by the music department; for membership information contact director Barry Torres at 229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu. The University Chorus will present its fall concert, entitled A Concert of Psalms, a program exploring the great variety of Psalm settings through the ages, on Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14 in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The group rehearses on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center, beginning on August 31. University Chorus also sings in the annual holiday Candlelight Service, to be held this year on Wednesday, December 8. A program of music from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway is planned for the spring. There are openings in all sections, but male voices are particularly welcome. The Early Music Ensemble is comprised of two groups, the Early Music Players and the Early Music Singers. Their repertoire is drawn from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Players perform both on modern instruments and on a wide variety of early instruments from the University's Romer Collection, including recorders, crumhorns, harp, organetto, lute, viols, shawms and harpsichord. They rehearse on Mondays at 7 p.m., also in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center, beginning on August 30. The Singers concentrate on the great sacred a capella music of the time and meet on Thursdays in Gunnison Memorial Chapel, at 7 p.m., beginning on September 2. The Early Music Ensemble fall concert will be given on Thursday, November 18, in Gunnison Memorial Chapel and will feature the music of the great Renaissance composer Josquin DesPrez.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
