RENOVATIONS PLANNED AT SLU TO SAVE MONEY AND ENERGY

CANTON - St. Lawrence University will undergo campus improvements this
year aimed at saving an estimated $160,000 per year in energy costs
and consumption. The project was approved by the University's Board
of Trustees at its meeting in May.
An energy audit was conducted earlier this year in 50 of
St. Lawrence's 70 campus buildings by engineers Lundquist, Killeen,
Potvin and Bender Inc., of Saint Paul, Minnesota, to identify energy
conservation and cost-savings opportunities. The audit revealed a
number of those opportunities and estimated an annual savings of
$160,000, beginning next year, if improvements were made. With those
savings realized, the approved renovations are also estimated to have
a full "pay-back" period of less than two years.
Phase I of the project, with an estimated cost of about
$250,000, will begin this summer, with renovations to Appleton
Arena, Augsbury Physical Education Center, Leithead Field House and
Newell Field House. It includes installation of sensors to control
lighting; replacement of plumbing fixtures; installation of equipment
improving the efficiency of heating systems; and devices to recover
heat produced by the refrigeration system of the ice rink.
The audit was conducted through field observations and
measurements; interviews with facilities operations and other staff
members; review of available drawings and operational manuals; and
engineering estimates. It was done through the New York State Energy
Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Energy Audit Program,
with assistance from Community Energy Services, Inc., of Hermon,
New York.
Subsequent phases of the program, if approved, will cover
other areas of the campus, including the heating plant, classroom
buildings, residence halls and offices.
