SLU BEGINS ENERGY EDUCATION CAMPAIGN
CANTON – An "energy education campaign" is under way at St. Lawrence
University, and will continue throughout the fall and winter seasons.
Beginning with a kick-off event on campus September 29, the campaign
follows up on an energy "audit" of the campus conducted in 2003. In
addition to making the campus community aware of the benefits of saving
energy, the campaign also aims to encourage energy-saving habits, such as
turning off lights in unused areas; turning off computers at the end of
the work/study day; unplugging unused appliances; replacing incandescent
light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and walking, rather than
driving, to locations on and near campus.
Members of the campus community are being asked to sign a "pledge
card," indicating a commitment to those activities. Members of the
Environmental Action Organization will staff a table regularly in the Student
Center where people can sign the energy pledge, and throughout the semester
the community will receive information about these energy-saving behaviors,
as well as others. In February of 2005, a symposium will be held on campus,
and include a report on the results of the campaign, plus recommendations
for the future.
St. Lawrence's Energy Education Campaign is being conducted with
assistance from the New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) Energy Audit Program and Community Energy Services,
Inc., of Hermon, New York.
Those organizations also provided assistance for the energy audit
of the campus in 2003.
