A List 4/25/05 SLU'S EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLE PLAYS WORKS OF 'JOSQUIN'S FRIENDS' CANTON – The Early Music Ensemble at St. Lawrence University will present "Josquin's Friends: Obrecht, Isaac, de la Rue" on Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus. The performance is open to the public, free of charge. This concert continues the exploration of the great Netherlander composers of the time of Columbus, begun with the Ensemble's fall concert dedicated to Josquin Des Prez (c.1450-1521). Director Barry Torres states, "This was an extraordinary time in Western music history, with many high-level composers all hailing from the 'low countries.'" The Ensemble will perform instrumental works on recorders and crumhorns, and a cappella vocal music for the Mass by three of the most illustrious musicians at the turn of the 16th century, men who worked at the greatest courts of Europe – Jacob Obrecht (Ercole d'Este, Duke of Ferrara), Heinrich Isaac (Lorenzo di Medici and Maximilian, Holy Roman Emperor) and Pierre de la Rue (Maximilian and Phillip the Fair, Duke of Burgundy). The Early Music Ensemble – the Early Music Players and the Early Music Singers – is a group of students, faculty and community members dedicated to the performance of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music. The Players perform on both modern instruments and replica period instruments from the University's Romer Collection. -30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
