A List 4/5/04 TELEMANN COMPOSITIONS TO BE PERFORMED BY SLU ENSEMBLE CANTON – St. Lawrence University's Early Music Ensemble Baroque Players will present an evening of chamber music by Georg Phillipp Telemann (1681-1767) on Saturday, April 10, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole on campus. It is open to the public, free of charge. Telemann is among the most prolific of all European composers and his music, while voluminous, is of the highest quality, well wrought yet gracious. He was one of the most highly sought-after and successful composers of his time, a time which included the likes of J.S. Bach and Handel. In addition to his composing he was heavily involved in promoting the general musical life of Germany through the founding of the first musical journal ever and through his own music publishing endeavors. Unlike his now more famous contemporary Bach, Telemann was a genial man, known for his good humor and boundless energy. The Early Music Ensemble Baroque Players is comprised of students, faculty and community members. St. Lawrence seniors Adam Sullivan (violin), Rachel Peterson (viola) and Jeremy Roy (harpsichord) will join with Kathryn Rodger of Ogdensburg (cello) in playing a suite from the Pyrmonter Kurwoche. This collection of seven suites, each entitled for the days of the week, was written as an entertainment to be heard by visitors to the famous mineral water spa in Pyrmont, still known for its healing waters. The sixth suite entitiled "Sabbato," or Saturday, will be heard as well as the introduction to "Domnenico," Sunday. Also on the program will be the Trio Sonata in E minor for flute, oboe and continuo which will feature Assistant Professor of Philosophy Laura Rediehs, Clarkson humanities professor Anne Mamary and Kay Caldwell, the E.J. Noble Arts Administrator for the Community Performance Series in Potsdam. Rediehs will also play a fantasia for solo flute in D minor.
