CONCERT OF MUSIC'S 'MICHAELANGELO' TO BE PERFORMED AT SLU
CANTON – St. Lawrence University's Early Music Ensemble will perform a concert
of works by Josquin Des Prez (c.1450-1521), the "Michaelangelo of music," on
Wednesday, November 17, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus.
The event is open to the public, free of charge.
The most sought-after composer of his time whose fame lasted more than
two generations after his death, Josquin worked for some of the most
prestigious establishments of Europe, including the papacy and Hercules d'Este,
Duke of Ferrara. Probably the most important composer before the second
half of the 16th century, Josquin is especially noted for the expressive
nature of his music, a trait that broke with the medieval tradition of more
abstract music. His artistic abilities were compared to those of Michelangelo,
and Martin Luther stated, "Josquin is master of the notes, which must
express what he desires; other composers must do what the notes dictate."
The program for the concert will be a tour of his varied output from light
chansons (performed instrumentally) to serious motets.
The Early Music Ensemble – the Early Music Players and the Early
Music Singers – is a group of students, faculty and community members
dedicated to the performance of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music.
The Players perform on both modern instruments and replica period instruments
from the University's Romer Collection.
