SPANISH MUSIC ON PROGRAM IN SLU EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLE CONCERT

CANTON - España: Medieval and Renaissance music from the
Iberian Peninsula will be performed in a concert by the
Early Music Ensemble of St. Lawrence University on Sunday,
December 2, at 4 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The
event is open to the public, free of charge.
Music performed will include motets of Tomás Luis da
Victoria, including his famous "O magnum mysterium"; Christmas
canciones of Francisco Guerrero - songs for the season with
a decidedly Spanish flavor; and instrumental renditions of
selections from the 12th-century collection of miracle songs
about the Virgin Mary, the Cantigas de Santa Maria.
The Early Music Ensemble is a group of students,
faculty and community members directed by Barry Torres. They
perform on medieval period instruments, including lute, harp,
recorders, rebec and hurdy-gurdy, from the University's Romer
Collection.
