'E-Lumination,' Public Art Using Snow & Lights, Will Be On SLU Quad Jan. 31-Feb. 4

CANTON - An illuminated display of art, made from banked snow, will be on display on St. Lawrence University's quadrangle - bordered by Vilas Hall, E.J. Noble University Center, Richardson Hall and Dean-Eaton Residence Hall - from January 31 through February 4. The public is encouraged to wander through the display, free of charge, after dark.

"E-Lumination" will be created by Matt Burnett and Scott Fuller, who recently created a similar work for the Long Lake Winter Carnival. Burnett and Fuller will give a lecture about their work, also open to the public free of charge, on Monday, January 31, at 7 p.m. in Room 10 of Carnegie International Education Center; Carnegie is located near the quad.

Burnett and Fuller state, "'E-Lumination' is intended as an unexpected spectacle, a provocation of reverie and environmental presence in the heart of icy winter. The unexpected color and light in the dark of winter, combined with the encompassing scale of the project, is intended to evoke a sense of community, presence and inspiration, a reflection on the contrasts of the season and the elements."

Using banked snow, the artists will mold multiple forms which will subsequently be carved into spherical, human-scale shapes. These "snow spheres" will have colorful abstract imagery projected upon them, "evoking natural textures and elements of different seasons and ecosystems. They will be completely illuminated and the imagery will change each night."

Burnett is an assistant professor in SUNY Canton's graphic and multimedia design program; Fuller is an assistant professor of art at St. Joseph's College in Maine.
