SLU Graduate, Trustee To Discuss Community Newspapers In Obama Era

CANTON - Elinor Tatum, publisher and editor-in-chief of the New York Amsterdam News, will speak on the topic "Community Newspapers in the Era of Barack Obama" on Wednesday, February 25, at 8 p.m. in the Eben Holden Center at St. Lawrence University. The event, part of the Contemporary Issues Forum, is open to the public, free of charge.

Tatum graduated from St. Lawrence in 1993 and is a trustee of the University. The New York Amsterdam News is the oldest and largest Black newspaper in New York City, and one of the oldest in the country. Tatum was appointed to her current position in 1997, and became one of the youngest publishers in Black press history. She also produces and co-hosts a weekly segment of Al Sharpton's radio show "Keepin' It Real," inviting members of the Black press to discuss national issues facing the African-American community. Tatum has also been a guest host on the WWRL radio morning and afternoon drive programs, and made appearances on television programs "The O'Reilly Factor," "20/20," "The Today Show" and "NBC Nightly News."

The Contemporary Issues Forum brings experts and participants in the making of news to campus throughout the academic year.
