CLASS OF 1993 GRADUATE ELECTED TO SLU BOARD OF TRUSTEES
CANTON - Elinor R. Tatum, of New York, has been elected to a six-year term on the Board of
Trustees of St. Lawrence University, beginning July 1. Tatum, a 1993 graduate of
St. Lawrence, is the publisher and editor-in-chief of The Amsterdam News, the oldest
continuously published black newspaper in New York City. The newspaper is also among the nation's
oldest continuously minority-owned newspapers.
Tatum earned her St. Lawrence degree in government, and was a Baker/Vilas Scholar.
As a student, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, the Laurentian Singers, the
Black Student Union, the Jewish Student Union and the equestrian team. She also
worked on the staff of the student newspaper and was a tour guide in the admissions
office. As an alumna, Tatum has been active as a career advisor and a fund-raising
volunteer for the University.
She began her career at The Amsterdam News as an intern, and moved into positions of
increasing responsibility. Tatum was named to her current position in 1997; she is the
first woman to be editor-in-chief of the paper, which began publication in 1909.
