PRESENTATION ON AUTISM OFFERED AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - A public presentation entitled "Interventions in 
Autism" will be given at St. Lawrence University by Patricia 
Egan, a behavioral consultant for public schools and private 
agencies, on the use of clinical and educational methods with 
individuals diagnosed as having autism. The event will be on 
Wednesday, November 28, at 4:30 p.m. in Bloomer Auditorium, 
Brown Hall 122.
	The presentation will describe the characteristics of 
autism and other pervasive developmental disorders; diagnostic 
procedures; and some current intervention approaches for 
children with autism. Recent increases in the reported number 
of autism cases will be reviewed, along with some theories 
concerning the causes of autism. Also, the most effective 
intervention methods and procedures to date will be described, 
along with supporting research studies validating their use.
	Egan earned her Ph.D. in developmental and child 
psychology at the University of Kansas in a program of study 
emphasizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and 
developmental disabilities. Prior to her current position, 
she was director of the Early Autism Program at Summit 
Educational Resources in Buffalo, and for many years worked 
in senior clinical and administrative positions at the May 
Institute, an internationally recognized program for children 
with autism. For more than 20 years, she has provided training 
and clinical consultation to professionals and parents, 
enabling them to serve effectively children and adults with 
developmental disabilities in homes, schools and other 
community settings.
