SLU Early Music Singers To Perform Four Settings Of 'Salve Regina'

CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Early Music Singers, directed by Barry Torres, with recorder players Laura Rediehs and Lynn Waickman, will perform four varied settings of the Salve Regina (Hail, Queen of Mercy) in a concert on Sunday, October 11, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

Salve Regina is among the most popular anthems to the Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic liturgy. Each of the settings is based on a chant, believed by scholars to have been written by the 11th-century scholar, composer, music theorist, mathematician and astronomer Hermannus Contractus. Hundreds of choral settings of the chant were written during the Renaissance, and the Singers' sampling of this repertoire spans the era.

The 10 voices of the Early Music Singers include St. Lawrence students and community members. The Singers' repertoire centers on the great a cappella sacred music of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. For more information, contact the music department at 315-229-5184.
