CANTON – German music for Advent and Christmas will be performed by the
Early Music Ensemble at St. Lawrence University, directed by Barry Torres,
on Sunday, December 7, at 4 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event
is open to the public, free of charge.
The SLU Strings will present a concert prelude at 3:30 p.m. Under
the direction of Christian Hosmer, they will play two 20th-century works
and Franz Shubert's Valses Nobles, Op. 77.
The Early Music Singers and Players will perform German music
from the 15th through the 18th centuries, mostly for the Advent and
Christmas season, including J.S. Bach's Cantata 61; traditional tunes
set by Renaissance and Baroque composers; and suites from Johann
Herman Schein's 1621 dance music, Banchetto Musicale, among others.
The Players perform on both modern instruments and replica
period instruments from the University's Romer Collection.
The Early Music Ensemble is a group of students, faculty and
community members dedicated to the performance of medieval, Renaissance
