FOOTBALL-PLAYING SLU ENGLISH PROF'S BOOK DETAILS GRIDIRON LIFE

CANTON – "At the age of 30, Bob Cowser, Jr., is leading a happy life as a
husband, father, and English professor at St. Lawrence University. But he misses
the exhilaration he felt as a young man when he took the field for high school
football games. In what is every Monday morning quarterback's fantasy, Cowser
revisits his days as a football star by joining the Watertown Red and Black, the
country's oldest semi-professional football team."
That's how the publishers (Grove/Atlantic) of Dream Season: A Professor
Joins America's Oldest Semi-Pro Football Team describe the new book by Cowser,
associate professor of English at St. Lawrence. "Inviting us onto the line of
scrimmage for each heartbreaking loss and breathtaking win," the publishers state,
"Dream Season takes us into the locker room of a fabled team challenged by an
exceptional season and into the heart of one man whose thirst for glory must
persevere. Witty, heartwarming, and written with the power and grace of a
hail-mary toss caught in the end zone, this remarkable story reminds us why we
love the games we play."
Cowser will speak about the book at a reception celebrating its
publication, held by the Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries at
St. Lawrence, on Friday, October 22, at 4 p.m. in the Josephine Young Room
of Owen D. Young Library. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Cowser's essays and reviews have appeared in Creative Nonfiction,
Sonora Review, Sycamore Review, Missouri Review, American Literary Review and
Prairie Schooner, and his essay "Scorekeeping" appeared alongside the work of
Raymond Carver and Richard Ford in Connecting, an anthology of writing about
family edited by Lee Gutkind. An Academy of American Poets prizewinner and a
Pushcart Prize nominee, Cowser earned his bachelor's degree from Loyola
University, a master's degree from Marquette University and the Ph.D. in
creative writing from the University of Nebraska. He currently plays for
the St. Lawrence Valley Trailblazers.
