BRUSH GALLERY AT SLU EXHIBITS TWO ARTISTS' DRAWINGS
CANTON - The exhibition "Homeland.Wonderland: Drawings by Chika Okeke-Agulu and Marcia
Kure" will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from Thursday,
October 6, through Thursday, November 3.
A lecture by the artists will be given on Thursday, October 6, at 7 p.m. in Room 123
of the Griffiths Arts Center. The event is open to the public, free of charge; it is
funded by the Jeanne Scribner Cashin Endowment for Fine Arts.
Okeke-Agulu is an assistant professor of art history at Pennsylvania State University. He
has published articles and reviews in African Arts, Nka: Journal of Contemporary African
Art and Glendora Review. He contributed to edited volumes such as Reading the Contemporary:
African Art from Theory to the Marketplace, The Nsukka Artists and Contemporary Nigerian
Art and The Grove Dictionary of Art. In addition to writing catalogue essays, Okeke-Agulu
has co-organized several exhibitions, including the "Nigerian Pavilion at the First
Johannesburg Biennale," 1995; "Seven Stories About Modern Art in Africa," Whitechapel
Art Gallery, London, 1995; and "The Short Century: Independence and Liberation Movements
in Africa, 1945-1994," Museum Villa Stuck, Munich, 2001.
Kure is a native of Nigeria, and now lives in Pennsylvania. She graduated from the
University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and her works have been exhibited in Nigeria, the United
States and Germany. Kure has participated in many group shows in Africa, Europe and North
America and has done studio residencies in Germany and the U.S. She
was awarded the Uche Okeke Prize for Drawing (1994) the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for
Artists (1999) and was included in the Multichoice Africa "African Artists of the Future"
calendar (2002).
