SLU BOARD ELECTS NORTH COUNTRY NATIVE TRUSTEE

CANTON – The St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees has elected Donald K.
Rose, of Palo Alto, California, a native of Pitcairn, to a six-year term,
effective July 1. Rose is a 1964 graduate of the University, and was recently
awarded an Alumni Citation.
Rose retired from Intel Corporation as general manager in 2001. For
the last 16 years of his career with Intel, he was responsible for manufacturing
engineering functions, including factory construction; manufacturing equipment
design, procurement and installation; and factory automation systems. During
that time, Intel grew from a start-up manufacturer into the standard-bearer
of the computer industry.
After graduating from St. Lawrence with a physics major and several
honors, the 1960 graduate of Harrisville Central School earned his doctorate
at Stanford University in 1971. Rose's thesis concerned microchip superconductivity.
This "cutting edge" topic propelled him into a career that dealt successively
with the development and manufacture of magnetic and superconducting devices;
magnetic bubble technology, significant in the evolution of computer memory
capacity; silicon-based chips, fundamental to the operation of today’s
microprocessors; and management of Intel's implementation of consistent practices
and procedures across its numerous facilities, the success of which company
officials have credited with turning the corporation into the multi-billion
dollar giant that it is today. He holds six patents and is credited with over
75 publications and presentations to technology, management, industry and
government forums. Rose spent the spring 2004 semester at St. Lawrence as a
visiting faculty member in physics and mathematics.
A long-time supporter of the University, Rose established four summer
fellowships for undergraduate study in the sciences and mathematics.
