DOLAN FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANT TO SLU FOR OUTDOOR LAB

CANTON - A unique outdoor geologic laboratory will be constructed at
St. Lawrence University, funded by a grant awarded by the Dolan Family
Foundation, of Woodbury, New York.
The laboratory will consist of 15 to 20 scenically landscaped
and systematically located rock "outcrops" placed at various locations
throughout the University's 1,000-acre campus. The outcrops will
enable students to translate two-dimensional geologic maps and photographs
from textbooks into three-dimensional examples found in nature, and
to understand the different natural processes that must have taken place
over time to create the specific distribution and characteristics
demonstrated by the examples.
Called the Dolan Outdoor Geology Laboratory, the outcrops will
be specifically selected, placed and landscaped to serve as faculty
demonstration tools and student project resources. In addition to
augmenting the geology curriculum, this innovative laboratory will
also enhance the University campus and be experienced by all students,
not just those in geology. It is expected to be completed in the fall
of 2003.
"I am very grateful to the Dolan Family Foundation for this
grant, which will give our geologists a particularly creative solution
to an ongoing challenge they face, in teaching our students the processes
that shape the geologic topography of our Earth," University President
Daniel F. Sullivan said. "What makes this project so intriguing is that
the solution will actually change and enhance the geologic topography
of our own campus."
Thomas Dolan '74, a director of the Dolan Family Foundation,
said, "Our Foundation is pleased to support this important project for
the geology and science programs at St. Lawrence University. As a
former student, I can appreciate the impact it will have and look
forward to its completion."
