SLU TEAMS WITH WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES ON 'DIALOGUE PROJECT'
CANTON – A project that will connect St. Lawrence University students with
community members to examine issues as reported in The Watertown Daily Times
in order to promote dialogue about responsible citizenship in a democratic
society has been awarded a grant of $5,500 by the Center for Liberal Education
and Civic Engagement, sponsored by the Association of American College and
Universities and Campus Compact. It is part of the Center's inaugural project,
"Journey Towards Democracy: Power, Voice and the Public Good."
Only seven awards were granted, of some 137 applications made. St. Lawrence
will provide matching funds for the program.
The University's dialogue project will explore how local concerns are
embedded in larger national and global dynamics, in order to promote a dialogue
that emphasizes the importance of civic engagement on a scale that is accessible
to all citizens. The central strategy is to bring together participants for a
series of facilitated dialogues to discuss issues important to the local community
and discover how those issues relate to regional, national, and global events.
Topics identified in The Watertown Daily Times will provide a centralized focus
for the dialogues.
The project participants will be students, faculty and representatives from
the local community.
"Journey Towards Democracy," sponsored by the Center for Liberal Education
and Civic Engagement, a joint initiative of the Association of American Colleges and
Universities and Campus Compact, has a goal of fostering robust and candid dialogues
about how to put student learning about democracy and the public good at the center
of academic inquiry. Through these dialogues, St. Lawrence and the other participating
institutions will explore how students are currently learning about the practice of
responsible citizenship.
