'Debutante Balls' Comedic Performance Piece At SLU October 8
CANTON - "Debutante Balls," described as a "theatrical stand-up comedy dance" by performance artist Scott Turner Schofield, will be at St. Lawrence University on Friday, October 8, at 8 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre, Griffiths Arts Center. The event, part of the Arts Collaborative's Arts Across the Curriculum series, is open to the public, free of charge.
In "Debutante Balls," Schofield blends theatre, dance, and stand-up comedy to introduce audiences to the culture of Southern debutante balls. With a "wicked sense of self-aware humor and poetic sensibility," Schofield guides audiences gently and genteely through the many ways he "came out" in Southern society – as a lesbian, radical feminist and finally, as a transgender man - poking fun along the way at gender roles and nostalgia for gone-with-the-wind traditions in modern times.
In addition to performances, Schofield's schedule includes residencies where he conducts lectures, workshops with youth (including fraternities and sororities) and administrators in college, municipal and corporate settings. He will lead two workshops at St. Lawrence, on "Trans 101: Queer Theory in Practice" and "Page to Stage: Making Performance for Social Change."
