Civil Rights And Economic Power Topic For Talk At SLU

CANTON - David Beito, professor of history at the University of Alabama, will give a talk at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall on his recent book, co-authored with his wife Linda Royster Beito, entitled Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power. The event, part of the visiting speaker series in political economy and the Contemporary Issues Forum, is open to the public, free of charge.

Drawing from extensive interviews with Howard's friends and contemporaries, as well as FBI files, court documents and private papers, the Beitos' book presents a vibrant portrait of a complicated civil rights leader, iconoclastic businessman and tireless activist. David Beito is the author of three books and his research has been published in a variety of academic journals. In 2007, he was appointed to chair the Alabama State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights.

The Contemporary Issues Forum brings experts and participants in the making of news to campus throughout the academic year.
