SLU PROF'S BOOK ON WEIL CELEBRATED BY LIBRARY FRIENDS

CANTON - The Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries at 
St. Lawrence University will celebrate Professor of Modern Languages 
and Literatures Joan E. Dargan's book, Simone Weil: Thinking 
Poetically, with a reception in the Josephine Young Room of Owen D. 
Young Library on Friday, December 14, at 4 p.m. Dargan will speak 
about her book, and refreshments will be served. The event is open 
to the public, free of charge.
	Dargan's 1999 book, published by the State University of New 
York Press, was awarded the Prix Anne de Jaeger by the Fondation Anne 
de Jaeger in France in 2000. The prize is awarded periodically to 
recognize distinguished contributions to scholarship on the French 
philosopher, mystic and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943).
	The author of a number of scholarly pieces on Weil, Dargan 
translated the 1995 book The Religious Metaphysics of Simone Weil. A 
St. Lawrence faculty member since 1983, she is a graduate of Anna 
Maria College, with a master's degree and Ph.D. from Princeton University. 
She has been a director of the University's program of study in France.
