'DANCING WITH THE ORGAN' PROGRAM OFFERED AT SLU

CANTON - Organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor will offer a free concert of music called "Dancing with the Organ" on Friday, April 20, beginning at 12:15 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

The program includes "Sun Dance," from Organ Dances by Bob Chilcott, as well as a minuet from Handel's Fireworks Music, a rondeau from Henry Purcell and others.

Proctor, a well known and respected organist and choral conductor in the eastern United States and especially in the Washington, DC, area, was, for nearly three decades, the director of music and arts and organist for Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington. She has played recitals in many venues in the eastern United States, including the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where she was the first woman to present a full-length organ recital. She is also the founder and director of Circle Singers and has directed numerous church choirs. Proctor was also the first woman to conduct a concert on the stage of the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center and has taught organ and choirs at all levels.
