'DANCING WITH THE ORGAN' PROGRAM OFFERED AT SLU
CANTON - Organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor will offer a free concert of
music called "Dancing with the Organ" on Friday, April 20, beginning at
12:15 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The event
is open to the public, free of charge.
The program includes "Sun Dance," from Organ Dances by Bob Chilcott, as well
as a minuet from Handel's Fireworks Music, a rondeau from Henry Purcell and
others.
Proctor, a well known and respected organist and choral conductor in the eastern
United States and especially in the Washington, DC, area, was, for nearly three
decades, the director of music and arts and organist for Westmoreland
Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington. She has played recitals
in many venues in the eastern United States, including the Lincoln Center for
the Performing Arts in New York City and the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, where she was the first woman to present a full-length organ
recital. She is also the founder and director of Circle Singers and has directed
numerous church choirs. Proctor was also the first woman to conduct a concert
on the stage of the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center and has taught organ
and choirs at all levels.
