CANADIAN POET DABYDEEN TO VISIT SLU

CANTON - Cyril Dabydeen, the official poet laureate of Ottawa, 
Canada, from 1984 through 1987, will speak and read from his 
work in an appearance at St. Lawrence University on Thursday, 
April 24, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole, the final event in the 
2002-2003 Writers Series.
	Dabydeen was born in Guyana, South America, but has 
lived in Canada for 30 years. His poetry has appeared in over 
30 journals in six countries, including The Antigonish Review, 
The Critical Quarterly, The Journal of South Asian Literature 
and Prism International. Dabydeen's poetry and fiction have 
been anthologized in over 20 volumes in five countries, 
including The Penguin Book of Caribbean Verse; Other Voices: 
Writings by Blacks in Canada and Voices: Canadian Writers of 
African Descent. His fiction can be found in the University 
of North Carolina online journal Jouvert and in The Toronto 
Review, The Fiddlehead, New Quarterly and Descant.
	Dabydeen's reading is supported by the Sandra Nelson 
Memorial Poetry Fund at St. Lawrence University.
