SLU ADDS NEW PROGRAM IN U.S. CULTURAL & ETHNIC STUDIES

CANTON - St. Lawrence University has approved a new interdisciplinary
minor, in United States cultural and ethnic studies, beginning
in the fall semester of this year.
To successfully complete the minor, students must take
six courses spread across at least four different disciplines.
Required courses include Introduction to Intercultural Studies
and one course from five offered in history, government,
sociology and gender studies. Mary Jane Smith, assistant professor
of history, will coordinate the program.
Students will also concentrate in a particular area of
United States cultural and ethnic studies. These "tracks" will
allow students to explore an aspect of U.S. cultural and ethnic
identity more fully and develop a deeper understanding of
cultural diversity within the United States. Concentrations
may be taken in African-American studies; Latino and Chicano
studies; sexualities; or comparative ethnicity. Students may
also elect to configure their own thematic concentration, in
consultation with advisors. Possible themes might include, as
examples, religious diversity; immigrant communities; regional
diversity; social movements; or class structure.
