'PATRIOTISM, POLITICS & ENVIRONMENT' TOPICS FOR SLU LECTURE

CANTON – David W. Orr, Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and
Politics at Oberlin College, will deliver a lecture titled "Patriotism,
Politics and Environment in the Age of Terror" on Tuesday, October 19, at 8 p.m.
in Eben Holden Dining Hall at St. Lawrence University, as part of the 2004
Hays and Margaret Crimmel Colloquium. A reception will follow; both are open
to the public, free of charge.
Orr is the author of four books: The Last Refuge: Patriotism, Politics,
and the Environment in the Age of Terror (Island Press, 2004); The Nature of
Design (Oxford, 2002); Earth in Mind (Island Press, 1994); and Ecological
Literacy (SUNY, 1992), and is the co-editor of The Global Predicament (North
Carolina, 1979) and The Campus and Environmental Responsibility (Jossey-Bass,
1992). He has published over 120 articles in scientific journals, social
science publications and popular magazines, and has lectured at over 100
institutions throughout North America and Europe. In an era when scholars
are writing more and more specialized texts, Orr is a leader in holistic
thinking; he links politics, economics, history and environmental studies,
and challenges both individuals and institutions to expand their thinking.
Perhaps best known for his pioneering work in ecological literacy
and the role and responsibility of higher education to prepare a generation
of citizens who will work toward a more sustainable world, Orr's recent
work in ecological design culminated in the fund-raising for and design
of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies at Oberlin. The
New York Times described this building as the "most remarkable" of a new
generation of college buildings, and the U.S. Department of Energy
selected it as one of 30 "milestone buildings" of the 20th century.
The Crimmel Colloquium was established at St. Lawrence in 1996 by
Emeritus Professor of Philosophy Henry H. Crimmel, in memory of his parents.
Its purpose is to bring to campus speakers to address issues of
fundamental importance to the liberal arts college and to liberal education,
especially those articulated and examined in Crimmel's 1993 book The
Liberal Arts College and the Ideal of Liberal Education: The Case for
Radical Reform.
