21ST-CENTURY COLLEGE IS TOPIC FOR SLU COLLOQUIUM

CANTON -- "The 21st-Century College" is the topic for the
1999 Hays and Margaret Crimmel Colloquium on Education at
St. Lawrence University.
A public presentation on the topic will be given on
Monday, October 4, by State University of New York Trustee
Candace de Russy and University of Pennsylvania Professor of
History Alan Kors at 8 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts
Center. The event is free of charge.
Formerly a college professor, de Russy serves on the
SUNY Board's executive committee and chairs its academic standards
committee. She is a nationally recognized writer and lecturer on
education and cultural issues, and drew attention with her public
criticism of a conference held at SUNY-New Paltz titled "Revolting
Behavior: The Challenges of Women's Sexual Freedom." A member of the
Trustees Council of the National Alumni Forum, de Russy is a
contributing editor of Crisis magazine.
Kors has written extensively on the 17th and 18th centuries,
particularly on the relationship between orthodox and heterodox
thought, and he is editor-in-chief of the Oxford University Press
Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment, an international project that will
be published in four volumes by 2001. He is also a visible and outspoken
critic of "political correctness," co-authoring, with Harvey Silverglate,
The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America's Campuses.
Kors is president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education,
a non-profit organization he co-founded with Silverglate.
While they are at St. Lawrence, de Russy and Kors will also give
presentations to faculty, and participate in discussions on liberal
education.
The Crimmel Colloquium was established at St. Lawrence in 1996
by Emeritus Professor of Philosophy Henry H. Crimmel, in memory of his
parents. Its purpose is to bring to campus speakers to address issues of
fundamental importance to the liberal arts college and to liberal education,
especially those articulated and examined in Crimmel's 1993 book The Liberal
Arts College and the Idea of Liberal Education: The Case for Radical Reform.
