WILLIAM CREASY GIFT TO SLU WILL ENHANCE CAMPUS

CANTON -- A gift to St. Lawrence University by Class of 1952
graduate William N. Creasy Jr., of Greenwich, Connecticut, will
provide enhancements to the campus, in the spot where Commencement
is traditionally held and in areas near the University's athletics
facilities.
Creasy Commencement Commons, located on the Owen D. Young
Library Quadrangle, is a patio and stage that will provide an improved
setting for the annual graduation ceremony as well as a permanent spot
for outdoor classes or more casual gatherings throughout the year. Its
construction will be completed in time for this year's Commencement,
to be held May 20.
Creasy Way, to include landscaping and walkways, will be completed
this summer. It will span St. Lawrence's athletic facilities, from Park
Street to the outdoor tennis courts, and from Leckonby Stadium to the Newell
Field House and new fitness center.
President of Delparc Productions Inc., Creasy has given St. Lawrence
$335,000 for the projects, bringing his total gift for Campaign St. Lawrence
to $400,000 to date.
"I am so pleased that Bill Creasy has offered to further enhance the
beauty of two prominent outdoor spaces on our campus," said President
Daniel F. Sullivan. "The addition of Creasy Commencement Commons as a student
gathering place and Commencement site, and the creation of the park to be
known as Creasy Way, will provide our community with two new wonderfully
functional and attractive spaces. We are deeply grateful for Bill's generosity
and vision."
A television sports executive, Creasy began his career in broadcasting
at KSLU, the campus radio station, in 1949, and then as a summer announcer
for WWNY radio in Watertown. A postgraduate degree from the University of
Southern California was followed by service in the U.S. Army. He was an
instructor in radio and television at St. Lawrence from 1955 to 1957, when
he joined Sports Network, an independent production company in New York.
From 1963 to 1969, Creasy was a producer and director for CBS-TV sports,
producing -- among other events -- the first two Super Bowls, the Triple
Crown of horse racing and directing major-league baseball telecasts. In
1969, he was appointed president of the expansion National Hockey League
team the Oakland Seals, moving in 1972 to form his own production company,
Delparc Productions Inc. In 1979, Creasy was recruited by the start-up cable
network ESPN to head its programming and is presently senior consultant
to ESPN, Inc.
"Whenever I have visited St. Lawrence in recent years, I've been
inspired by both the beauty and the expansion of the campus," Creasy commented,
"and its remarkable location between the mighty St. Lawrence River and the
Adirondack foothills. I hope Creasy Commencement Commons will enhance that
natural setting."
Creasy added, "First friendships at St. Lawrence last a lifetime, but
the bonus is those special friendships we learn to appreciate in Canton and
the North Country community. For me, most notably, were these shared friendships
with Jack Leonard '44, Moose Levato '42, Paul Patten '48 and Billy Walsh '44.
Creasy Way honors these valued friendships."
