MEXICAN MUSIC FEATURED AT SLU CONCERT/DANCE
CANTON - A dance and concert performance by Los Inalcanzables will take place on
Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m. in the Winston Room of the St. Lawrence University
Student Center; it is open to the public, free of charge.
The group performs "corridos," or Mexican ballads that are part of the collective
memory among Mexican migrants. Many of the corridos to be performed are analyzed
in the recent book Corridos in Migrant Memory by Assistant Professor of Global
Studies Martha I. Chew Sánchez.
The musical performance by Los Inalcanzables is a unique opportunity to appreciate
part of a transnational vaquero (cowboy) culture of the region of Chihuahua, Mexico;
New Mexico; and northern Texas. Manuel Márquez, the lead singer of Los Inalcanzables,
is interviewed in Chew Sánchez's book, particularly in the chapter titled "De parranda
con el Diablo: performance and the aesthetics of conjunto norteño dance music." In
the chapter, Márquez discusses in detail the main characteristics of the music from
transnational conjunto norteños in Chihuahua, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado, as
well as his experience as a vaquero and singer. Los Inalcanzables are originally
from Satevo, Chihuahua, and are now based in northern Texas (Dumas), performing on
both sides of the US/Mexico border, mainly along El Camino Real.
