A List 4/5/99 RAPE & SUICIDE DISCUSSED IN PRESENTATION AT SLU CANTON - Andrea Fuller Cooper, a woman whose daughter committed suicide after experiencing depression due to a rape, will give a presentation on acquaintance rape, depression and suicide on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public. Cooper's daughter Kristin, a student at Baker University in Kansas, was raped by a friend in August of 1995. Despite a friend's encouragement to go to the police or to share the information with her parents or a counselor, she told only a few sorority sisters and began to drift into a state of depression. Months passed before she realized she could no longer deal with the pain, and she took her own life on New Year's Eve, 1995. Her mother now travels around the country sharing Kristin's story. Clinical depression affects 10 million Americans in any given year, and one-fourth of all women will suffer at least one occurrence of depression in their lifetimes. One-third of all women in college suffer from depression. Further, more than 2.5 million women experience some form of violence each year, and nearly two of every three of these women are attacked by someone they know. By some estimates, one in four women will be attacked during her college career. For more information, call the student activities office at 315-229-5757.-30- Back To News Releases
