Faculty, Staff Receive Awards At St. Lawrence University Convocation

CANTON - St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards for outstanding service at Convocation, held on campus August 26, marking the start of the academic year.

Associate Professor of Geology Jeffrey R. Chiarenzelli received the J. Calvin Keene Award; Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Marina A. Llorente was given the Louis and Frances Maslow Award; and Rance Davis, associate dean of student life, received the John P. Taylor Award.

The Keene Award was established in 1975 and is given to a faculty member in recognition of "high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral concern." A 1981 graduate of St. Lawrence, Chiarenzelli holds a master's degree from Carleton University in Ottawa and earned the Ph.D. at the University of Kansas. A University faculty member since 2006, he previously taught at SUNY Potsdam and was a research associate at SUNY Oswego's Environmental Research Center. Chiarenzelli has done extensive research on Precambrian rocks that make up the Canadian Shield and the Adirondacks, and has received grants funding his research from the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund and National Science Foundation. Chiarenzelli's research often includes collaboration with his students.

The Maslow Award goes to the faculty member who has shown "the most interest in and understanding of the education and welfare of the student body as a whole." Llorente earned her master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas, after earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Málaga, Spain. Her current research focuses on ethics and contemporary poetry in Cuba, Mexico and Spain. She was not present to accept the award in person, as she is directing the University's program of study in Spain this year; it is the third time she has directed the program. In addition, Llorente founded St. Lawrence's Poetry for Peace series, a monthly event in which the community is invited to read poetry on a common theme.

The John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career Service Award was established in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining services director, recognizing distinguished service to the University by an administrator who has worked at least 12 years at St. Lawrence and who sustains the high standards of performance exemplified by Taylor. Davis, who is the director of multicultural affairs and judicial officer, earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in education from the University. He began his professional career at St. Lawrence in 1991 in counseling services, later becoming director of multicultural affairs and judicial officer. In 2003, Davis was promoted to associate dean.

Also recognized at Convocation were faculty entered on continuing tenure: Associate Professor of Performance and Communication Arts Traci A. Fordham-Hernandez; Associate Professor of English Paul R. Graham; Associate Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Ed Harcourt and Associate Professor of English Pedro E. Ponce.

In addition, Dorothy A. Limouze, fine arts, and Elizabeth A. Regosin, history, were recognized for promotion to the rank of full professor.
