KEENE, MASLOW, TAYLOR AWARDS GIVEN AT SLU

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards for
outstanding service at Convocation, held on campus August 28, marking the
start of the academic year.
Professor of Economics and Associate Dean of the First Year Steven G.
Horwitz received the J. Calvin Keene Award; Assistant Professor of Philosophy
Laura J. Rediehs was given the Louis and Frances Maslow Award; and Dorothy C.
Fletcher, assistant manager of dining and conference services, received the
John P. Taylor Award.
The Keene Award was established in 1975 and is given to a faculty member
in recognition of "high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching
and moral concern." Horwitz has been associate dean of the first year since 2001.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, with a master's degree and Ph.D. from
George Mason University, Horwitz has been on the faculty at St. Lawrence since
1989. A specialist in monetary theory and history, macroeconomics and political
economy, he is the author of several books and was the 1999 Frank P. Piskor
Faculty Lecturer.
The Maslow Award goes to the faculty member who has shown "the most interest
in and understanding of the education and welfare of the student body as a whole."
A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1999, Rediehs is a graduate of Earlham
College, with a master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Among
her published works is an essay on the topic "Evil" in the 2002 book, Collateral
Language: A User's Guide to America's New War. Rediehs is also a member of the
Early Music Ensemble on campus.
The John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career Service Award was established
in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining services director, recognizing
distinguished service to the University by an administrator who has worked at
least 12 years at St. Lawrence and who sustains the high standards of performance
exemplified by Taylor. Fletcher is a resident of Canton who has worked at
St. Lawrence since 1970. In addition to her dedication as an employee, President
Daniel F. Sullivan noted in his presentation of the award to Fletcher that she is
also well known on campus and in the community as a "ferocious" fan of the Skating
Saints hockey teams.
