SLU OFFERING NEW MAJOR IN CONSERVATION BIOLOGY
CANTON - St. Lawrence University has added a new major to its curriculum, in
conservation biology.
The major will meet the needs of a growing number of St. Lawrence students by
providing a science degree that prepares students for employment or graduate
programs in conservation biology, an area of interest for many students and
prospective students.
Conservation biology encompasses ideas and methods from biology, the other natural
sciences, the social sciences and the humanities.
An interdisciplinary major, St. Lawrence's program will include required
coursework in biology,
global studies, economics,
environmental studies,
philosophy, chemistry,
geology, anthropology and
mathematics. It will complement,
but not duplicate, existing majors, including global studies and environmental
studies, while providing a choice for students with primary interest in biology
as it relates to biodiversity protection.
In recent years, St. Lawrence has added two other interdisciplinary science majors,
biochemistry and
neuroscience. Majors in the sciences are popular at the University;
psychology and biology are perennially among the most popular degrees granted at
each Commencement.
