SLU JOINS WITH FOUR SCHOOLS TO SHARE LIBRARY HOLDINGS

CANTON - St. Lawrence University has joined with four other
institutions to share library holdings, making the collections
of all five available to students, faculty and staff.
Beginning in March, the Connect New York Union Catalog
and statewide delivery system became available, consisting of
library holdings from St. Lawrence, Colgate, Vassar, Rochester
Institute of Technology and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
This combined catalog contains almost 2 million book titles.
Access to this new catalog will be provided both through
the St. Lawrence libraries' Web site and its on-campus electronic
catalog, ODYsseus.
In addition to vastly increasing the number of offerings
available to library users, the new system speeds delivery of volumes
from participating institutions. It is expected that delivery of
books from member libraries will be made in two to three days
through the system, while normal interlibrary loan delivery times
can take from 10 to 14 days.
Currently, the shared database for Connect New York contains
over 1.8 million titles, with over 3 million holdings. St. Lawrence's
catalog represents approximately 320,000 titles; the new system expands
access six-fold. The institutions estimate that there is about a 25
percent overlap in the collections.
The system now focuses on book collections, but it is possible
that it will include access to journal collections eventually. In
addition, more libraries may be added to the union.
Additional information is available on the St. Lawrence
Libraries Web site, http://web.stlawu.edu/library".
