CONAGRA FOODS FOUNDATION ESTABLISHES SLU SCHOLARSHIP

CANTON - The ConAgra Foods Foundation has committed $1 million to 
St. Lawrence University to establish the Philip B. Fletcher Memorial 
Scholarship Fund, in honor of Fletcher, a 1954 graduate of 
St. Lawrence and former chairman and chief executive officer of 
ConAgra Foods Inc. A native of Carthage, New York, Fletcher died 
in 2000.
	The scholarship will benefit talented students with financial 
need, with first preference given to those from Carthage, and 
second preference to those from Jefferson and Lewis Counties. 
In 1993, Fletcher made a gift to the University, establishing a 
scholarship in his name and providing assistance to qualified 
students from his hometown. The Philip B. Fletcher Memorial Scholarship 
Fund will assure that outstanding students from that area who have 
financial need will be able to pursue an education at the University.
	When fully funded, it is expected the endowment will fund 
four scholarships each academic year.
	University President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "All of us 
at St. Lawrence are grateful to the ConAgra Foods Foundation for 
establishing this scholarship in memory of Phil Fletcher, who was 
a loyal and dedicated alumnus. It will make a vital and long-term 
difference in assisting students from the North Country with realizing 
the pursuit of an education here."
	"Although Phil Fletcher achieved international success in the 
food industry, he never forgot St. Lawrence and his hometown of 
Carthage," said Lynn Phares, president of the ConAgra Foods Foundation. 
"Phil was a strong believer in education, and he would be proud of 
the opportunities these scholarships will offer to St. Lawrence 
students."
	Fletcher earned a degree in geology from St. Lawrence, and 
later earned an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 
He was a member of the basketball and football teams at St. Lawrence, 
as well as Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. In 1998, he received an 
Alumni Citation from the University.
	Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, ConAgra Foods, Inc. is 
one of North America's largest packaged food companies, with a 
strong presence in consumer grocery as well as restaurant and other 
food-service establishments.
