ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT MAY 20
CANTON - St. Lawrence University's 2007 Commencement ceremony will take place on Sunday,
May 20, at 10 a.m. on Creasy Commencement Commons on campus, or Appleton Arena in the
event of inclement weather.
The University will confer honorary degrees on three distinguished visitors, all of
whom will give brief addresses:
- Robert Montgomery '82, an internationally renowned transplant surgeon, a member
of the faculty of Johns Hopkins University Medical School and co-founder of a
foundation that supports research on a rare form of congenital heart disease.
He has also received an Alumni Citation from the University.
- Jane Hamilton, author of The Book of Ruth, A Map of the World, Disobedience and
When Madeline Was Young, has been a participant in the University's annual
Writers Series and has worked with St. Lawrence students in writing classes.
- Jeanne Narum, director of the Independent Colleges Office, which assists
selective liberal arts colleges (including St. Lawrence) in seeking grant
support from federal and other sources. Narum is the founding director of
Project Kaleidoscope, an informal national alliance to strengthen undergraduate
learning in the sciences, mathematics and engineering in which St. Lawrence
participates.
Also at Commencement, the North Country Citation will be awarded to Bob Pettee and
Susan Neal, founders and directors of Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake. The company
has performed at the University many times over the years. St. Lawrence annually
awards the North Country Citation to an individual or individuals from the region
who, through professional and volunteer endeavors, has improved the quality of
life in the North Country.
