ST. LAWRENCE COMMENCEMENT MAY 20

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University's Commencement ceremonies will 
be held on Sunday, May 20, at 10 a.m., on the Owen D. Young Library 
Quadrangle, or in Appleton Arena, in the event of rain.
	Three people will receive honorary degrees at Commencement:

- Richard E. Hecklinger, a 1965 St. Lawrence graduate and United States 
Ambassador to Thailand. After graduating from St. Lawrence, he earned a 
master's degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International 
Studies and a law degree from Harvard Law School. As a career member of 
the Senior Foreign Service, he has had international responsibilities in 
Germany and The Hague as well as domestic responsibilities in economic 
and political affairs. He was confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to Thailand 
in July 1998.

- Michael Hoffman, a 1964 graduate of St. Lawrence. He is executive director 
of the Aperture Foundation Inc.; managing editor and publisher of Aperture, 
the quarterly photography magazine; and curator and advisor of the Alfred 
Stieglitz Center of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For two years he also 
served as executive director of the Paul Strand Foundation. Most recently, 
Hoffman contributed an essay to the book Photographs at St. Lawrence University.

- Barbara R. Williams, vice chairman emerita of the Rand Corporation. Williams 
taught sociology and anthropology at St. Lawrence from 1962-1967. She 
joined the Rand Corporation's social science department in 1971 and 
served successively in the areas of urban policy analysis, criminal 
justice, and drug policy research.
	All three honorary degree recipients will speak at Commencement.
In addition, Catherine B. Newell, of Hammond, and Michael C. Ringer, 
Alexandria Bay, will receive North Country Citations at the ceremony.
	Newell, a native of Ogdensburg, is a founding member of the environmental 
organization Save The River, North Country Citizens for Responsible Land Use 
and the Hammond History and Folk Art Museum. She is a former board member of 
the St. Lawrence Aquarium and Ecological Center, Ogdensburg Command Performances 
and North Country Public Radio's Community Advisory Board. Currently, Newell 
is a member of the board of the United Helpers Organization and the Frederic 
Remington Art Museum's International Advisory Board. Newell is a co-founder 
of the Sweetgrass Foundation, a private charitable institution that is dedicated 
to the enrichment of life in the North Country.
	Ringer is a local artist who has painted and sculpted works based 
on scenes of the St. Lawrence River, the Thousand Islands region and the 
Adirondacks. Three books of his work, For the Love of the River, The River 
and River Life have been published, and he is the host of the nationally 
distributed public television program "The Artist's World." Ringer is a 
member of the Thousand Islands Association and has galleries of his work 
in Alexandria Bay and Clayton.
	St. Lawrence annually awards the North Country Citation to individuals 
from the region who, through their professional and volunteer endeavors, have 
improved the quality of life in the North Country.
