SLU Football Team Has 'Guest Coaches' For Home Games
CANTON - When St. Lawrence University's football team hits Weeks Field for home games this fall, they'll have support from a special coaching squad: a member of the faculty or staff serves as a "guest coach" for each home game in a program started in 2006 by Head Coach Chris Phelps.
Phelps, a 1991 St. Lawrence graduate, says that "The designated coach of the week receives a different and unique perspective into the football program and the lives of its student-athletes. Those participating attend the Thursday quarterback meeting, attend Thursday practice and watch the game from the sidelines with the team."
The guest coaches this year are Burry Professor of Statistics Robin Lock for the September 13 game versus Norwich; General Biology Specialist and C-STEP Coordinator Carol Budd, September 20 versus Alfred; Vice President of the University and Dean of Academic Affairs Valerie Lehr, October 4 versus Hobart; Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean for Diversity and Social Justice Margaret Kent Bass, October 25 versus Rensselaer; and Associate Professor of Fine Arts Dorothy Limouze, November 15 versus Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
