CONSERVATION BIOLOGIST TALKS ABOUT 'AFRICAN DILEMMA' AT SLU
CANTON - "Biodiversity Conservation or Poverty Eradication: Africa's Dilemma"
is the title of the 2006 C.L.R. James Lecture in African Studies at St. Lawrence
University, to be delivered by John Waithaka, a conservation biologist with Parks
Canada. His talk is on Thursday, October 12, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn
Hall; it is open to the public, free of charge.
In the talk, Waithaka will examine why, despite being rich in natural resources,
Africa's population remains largely mired in poverty.
A native of Kenya, Waithaka has experience in wildlife and ecotourism research;
conservation and management of wildlife and habitats; developing conservation
policies; designing conservation areas; and working on endangered species and
habitats. A former ecology professor in Kenya, he has also worked for Wildlife
Conservation International, the conservation branch of the New York Zoological
Society; for the Kenya Wildlife Service in its elephant program, endangered
species program and biodiversity department; and as manager of the European
Union's Biodiversity Conservation Program and as director of the African
Conservation Centre.
