'CLOUD 9' TO BE PERFORMED AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill, "a satirical comedy of
sexual politics and gender construction," will be performed
at St. Lawrence University April 5 through 8, at 8 p.m. each
evening, in Gulick Theatre. The performances are open to the
public, free of charge. Due to the content and subject matter
of the play, the performances are not suitable for children.
The play explores the parallels between colonial and
sexual oppression in Britain. The first act is a comical
send-up of Victorian sexual mores and takes place in colonial
Africa in 1880. In the more serious and thought-provoking second
act, the action moves to London in 1980, but for the characters,
only 25 years has passed. A hit in both London and New York in
the early 1980's, Cloud 9 is one of the most significant plays
about gender identity and sexuality in the last quarter of the
20th century.
This production is directed by Associate Professor of
Speech and Theatre Rebecca Daniels. Production staff include
Andrea Nouryeh, dramaturg; Molly Eness, set design; Hilary Oak,
costume design; John Larrance, lighting design/scenic production;
J. Kerr Grant, dialect coach; and Connie Meng, music coach.
Dramaturgical assistants are Reid Beadel, Michael Flood, Matthew
Powers and Christopher Spear.
Cast members are Alexei Boulokhov, Elizabeth Carr, Amy
Miller-Flanagan, Nathan Sabourin, Colin Sullivan, Daniel Usaj
and Jennifer Williamson.
