St. Lawrence Students Going Bald During Clips for Cancer
CANTON – Come February 15, several St. Lawrence University students will have shaved heads, all to support funding and research for childhood cancer.
Clips for Cancer will take place on Friday, February 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Winston Room on the first floor of the Sullivan Student Center. The event is open to the public to take part in or watch.
St. Lawrence junior Allison Baier, president of the Pre-Health Club, which sponsors the event, is excited to bring Clips for Cancer back to campus for the third straight year.
“We had about 15-20 people shave their heads last year and raised about $4,000,” she said. “It is never too late to sign up. Last year, we had several people decide to shave their heads on the day of the event. There is no minimal fundraising requirement for we believe that the act of shaving one's head alone is a significant and powerful statement in of itself."
The Clips for Cancer fundraising site, set up through St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises money and awareness for childhood cancer research, shows 35 people have signed up to either shave their heads or volunteer.
“We're excited we've surpassed our $5,000 goal as every dollar counts,” Baier said.
According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website, more children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease. About one in 300 boys and one in 33 girls will have cancer before they turn 20 years old, and worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes.
For Baier, the national statistics coupled with personal reasons, are what’s motivating her to make sure this event is a success. “I have had several family members affected by cancer,” she said. “I believe that with ample funds and support, life-saving research can be done.
“Whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer or donate, we hope you'll come join us and be a part of the excitement,” she said.
