CLASSICAL GUITAR RECITAL SET AT SLU

CANTON - A recital by classical guitarist Kishor Gurung will
take place at St. Lawrence University on Sunday, October 20,
at 4 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. Gurung
will also hold a guitar workshop, on Saturday, October 19, at
11 a.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall. Both events are open to the
public, free of charge.
A native of Nepal, Gurung was awarded a full scholarship
to study guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and
graduated in 1983 as the first Nepali to do so. In addition to
his numerous TV and radio appearances, Gurung has also appeared,
as a soloist, with the Long Island Youth Orchestra of New York.
In 1986, Gurung received a grant from the East-West Center
to pursue graduate studies in ethnomusicology at the University
of Hawaii in Honolulu. This led him to the ethnic enclave of
Yangjakot, near the Pokhara Valley of West Nepal, where he
undertook his field research on Ghantu, the narrative musical
observance in which prepubescent girls go into a trance-like
state.
Gurung has been a member of an advisory committee to
state-run Radio Nepal and has lectured at the Tribhuvan
University in Kathmandu. He is also the founder and president
of the Classical Guitar Society of Nepal and a member of the
Folklore Society of Nepal.
