A List 10/21/02 CONCERT OF CLASSICAL INDIAN MUSIC PRESENTED AT SLU CANTON - A concert of classical Indian music by singer Rashmi Venkateswaran will be presented at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, November 2, at 8 p.m. in the Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. The event is open to the public, free of charge. Venkateswaran is the manager of the University of Ottawa's chemistry teaching laboratories, but on many evenings she can be found singing classical southern Indian music at various venues in the Ottawa region. She has been giving such concerts since she was 12 years old, having had formal musical training in Madras, India. The basic form of the music is a monophonic song with improvised variations. There are 72 basic scales on the octave, and a rich variety of melodic motion. Both melodic and rhythmic structures are varied and compelling.
