SLU AWARDED $200,000 GRANT SUPPORTING ARTS INITIATIVE
CANTON - The Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation has awarded a $200,000 grant to
St. Lawrence University to support personnel and program development initiatives in its
Center for Arts and Technology.
In 2005, St. Lawrence completed Phase I of a multi-phase project to transform its
arts curriculum, supported by renovation and improvement in facilities for the
departments of fine arts, music and speech and theatre, as well as the Richard
F. Brush Art Gallery. The $1.2 million first phase also increases opportunity for
faculty and students across the arts disciplines to collaborate on work in new ways.
Support from this grant award from the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation will
assist with funding for the addition of a director of arts technology; an arts technician
for the Newell Center for Arts Technology; independent student research and creative
work through the University Fellows program; curriculum and faculty development;
and development of collaborative projects in the arts, for faculty across the
disciplines and for student/faculty work that is peer-reviewed on a competitive basis.
St. Lawrence President Daniel F. Sullivan stated, "With this generous support from the
Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation at this critical time, our faculty and students
will be able to take full advantage of our newly renovated facilities, staffing support
and additional programming funds, by exploring the use of new technologies for creative
expression, scholarship and original works. We are very grateful for the confidence they
have shown in our ability to further leverage the additional support needed for our
ambitious initiatives in the arts."
The University has received three previous grant awards from the Christian A. Johnson
Endeavor Foundation. A grant award in 1986 established and endowed the Christian A.
Johnson Scholarship Fund at St. Lawrence. In 1995, a $560,000 grant supported curriculum
development efforts aimed at increasing intercultural awareness. A $1 million challenge
grant approved in 1999 provided start-up funding for five new interdisciplinary
tenure-track faculty positions in global studies.
An independent organization based in New York City, the Foundation supports private
institutions of higher learning at the undergraduate level and educational outreach
programs of visual and performing arts organizations.
