SLU GETS $1 MILLION GRANT TO FUND NEW FACULTY POSITIONS

CANTON - The Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation has approved
a $1 million challenge grant to St. Lawrence University to provide
start-up funding for five new interdisciplinary tenure-track faculty
positions.
The grant will be paid to the University over four years, and
will be matched by another $1 million to be raised by St. Lawrence.
Each of the new positions will be created to meet three objectives:
	- To help strengthen and solidify the University's existing
programs in geographically based area studies.
	- To form a core group of scholars who will work together and
with other faculty at St. Lawrence to develop specific ways to bridge
area studies programs.
	- To provide the opportunity to explore how to interrelate global,
area and intercultural studies to better prepare students to be productive
and responsible citizens in an increasingly culturally diverse world.
It is expected that St. Lawrence will implement a new major program
in global studies, bringing area studies programs together in conversation
and collaboration with each other.
Currently St. Lawrence has five area studies programs: Canadian
studies; Asian Studies; African Studies; Latin American and Caribbean Studies
and European Studies. The new Global Studies model will assist in developing
better connections between these programs, while also addressing in greater
comparative depth an investigation of states, nations, cultures, communities,
ecologies and economies as they exist in larger structural, cultural and
natural contexts.
"I am very pleased that the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation
has recognized St. Lawrence University's vision of international education,"
President Daniel F. Sullivan said. "This new initiative will help us build
upon our strengths, and move forward in providing students with the skills
and knowledge they will need as they enter the increasingly complex and
interdependent world in which we live. We are grateful for their support in
the development of this important program."
The Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation awarded a grant of
$560,000 to St. Lawrence in 1995, for curriculum development efforts aimed
at increasing intercultural awareness. An independent organization based in
New York City, the Foundation supports private institutions of higher learning
at the undergraduate level and educational outreach programs of visual and
performing arts organizations.
