'Supertasters' Topic For Talk At St. Lawrence

CANTON - Linda Bartoshuk, an internationally known researcher specializing in the chemical senses of taste and smell, will give a talk at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall, titled "Are You a Supertaster? How Can You Tell? What Does It Mean?" The event, the Richard D. Church Lecture in Neuroscience, is open to the public, free of charge.

Bartoshuk earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from Carleton College. After completing a Ph.D. at Brown University, she worked at the Natick Army Research labs (where research related to food for military personnel is conducted) and then went to the Pierce Foundation and Yale University. She joined the University of Florida, Gainesville, faculty in 2005. Her research into taste and smell is in the domain of the UF College of Dentistry.

Bartoshuk has received a variety of research awards and has served in several leadership positions in her field. She was named to the American Psychological Association (APA) Board of Scientific Affairs and presented lectures as an APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer. She has been president of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences (AChemC) and two divisions of APA. In 1998 she received the AChemC Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Chemical Senses. Bartoshuk has been elected to membership in the Society of Experimental Psychology, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.

The Richard D. Church Lectureship Fund in Neuroscience was established in 2006 by retired engineer Church, of Norwood, in honor of his scientific collaborations with the late G. Atwood Manley, who graduated from St. Lawrence in 1916 and was the long-time editor of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer; the late Class of 1952 graduate Edward E. Bliss, Church's brother-in-law and national canoeing champion partner; the late Class of 1914 graduate Clarence C. Church, Richard Church's uncle; and the late Emeritus Professor of Physics Alfred Romer.
