INAUGURAL CHURCH LECTURE IN NEUROSCIENCE SET AT SLU

CANTON - The first annual Richard D. Church Lecture in Neuroscience at St. Lawrence University will be given by Dartmouth School of Medicine Professor of Physiology James C. Leiter on Thursday, November 9, at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden. It is open to the public, free of charge.

Leiter will speak on glial-neuronal interactions and the role of research in undergraduate education. A Dartmouth faculty member since 1987, Leiter studies the neurophysiology of respiratory control. He has also researched the nature of brainstem abnormalities underlying Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and he has an interest in respiratory control of the upper airway during wakefulness and sleep. In addition, studies on the ontogeny and cellular basis of carbon dioxide sensitivity in the central nervous system are under way in Leiter's laboratory.

The Richard D. Church Lectureship Fund in Neuroscience was established in 2006 by retired engineer Church, of Norwood, in honor of his scientific collaborations with the late G. Atwood Manley, who graduated from St. Lawrence in 1916 and was the long-time editor of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer; the late Class of 1952 graduate Edward E. Bliss, Church's brother-in-law and national canoeing champion partner; the late Class of 1914 graduate Clarence C. Church, Richard Church's uncle; and the late Emeritus Professor of Physics Alfred Romer.
