A List 10/13/03 FLUTIST CHRIS NORMAN & ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM AT SLU CANTON – Chris Norman, hailed as among the finest of contemporary flute players, and the Chris Norman Ensemble will perform in concert at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the North Star Pub, E.J. Noble University Center. The event is open to the public, free of charge. Members of the ensemble will also conduct a workshop on traditional Celtic music on Saturday, October 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center; it is also open to the public. Playing venues ranging from large international folk festivals and concert halls to intimate chamber music series, the ensemble presents diverse, high-energy programs drawn from its repertoire. Performances encompass traditional music of Canada, Scotland and Ireland, as well as Celtic-inspired works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, plus Norman's original compositions. The ensemble includes Norman (flutes, pipes, whistles, vocals), Andy Thurston (guitar, mandola, tiple), James Blachly (acoustic bass, viola da gamba, vocals) and Simeon Darley Chapin (percussion, drums, vocals). Their most recent release is the CD The Caledonian Flute, on Boxwood Music. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Norman's interest in the traditional music of Maritime Canada – as well as Scottish, Irish and French Canadian styles – drew him from his early path studying classical flute. His subsequent work has redefined the boundaries of both traditional and classical styles, forging a synthesis that has been embraced by audiences, scholars and critics of both schools.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
