A List 11/8/99 ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY CHORUS FALL CONCERT SET CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Chorus will perform a concert of German music, on Saturday, November 13, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 14, at 4 p.m., in Gulick Theater on campus. Both events are open to the public, free of charge. The program includes selections from the Musikalische Exequien by Heinrich Schutz and the Anna Magdalena Notebook by J.S. Bach. Schutz, the most important German composer before Bach, composed the pieces for the funeral of Prince Heinrich von Reuss, from texts written by the prince. They are a compilation of hymn verses and biblical passages which form a meditation on death, the transitory nature of live on Earth and resurrection. The Bach selections, composed for his wife's edification and pleasure, deal with the same subject matter, but in a more secular vein. The University Chorus is directed by Visiting Instructor of Music Barry Torres. Instrumentalists for the concert at Barbara Phillips-Farley, organ; Christian Hosmer, cello; and Harry Schenawolf, bass.
