AFRICAN SCHOLAR, CRITIC TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Nigerian scholar, poet and cultural critic Chinweizu will 
speak at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, November 7, on the topic 
"Africa and the World in the 21st Century." The event, part of the 
University's celebration of International Education Week, will be at 
7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center; it is open to the 
public, free of charge.
	Chinweizu is the author of The West and the Rest of Us, a 
historical study that "documents the predatory nature of the past 
six centuries of Western expansion." The book investigates the political, 
economic, cultural and psychological consequences for the "conquered"; 
shows the complicity of the African elites in the subjugation of Africa 
and tell of the responses which restored Africa's political independence.
He is also the co-author of the study "Towards the Decolonization of 
African Literature" and editor of the anthology Voices of 20th Century 
Africa: Griots and Towncriers.
	Educated in the U.S., Chinweizu has raised Pan-Africanist 
consciousness through his books, newspaper and magazine articles and 
public lectures in Africa, North America and Europe.
